A Hong Kong Christmas
Choices, choices: how should one celebrate Christmas in Hong Kong?
1. Visit the Christmas decorations at one or more shopping malls and have your photograph taken in front of a tree while you make the "peace" symbol with both hands.
2. Stroll along the Kowloon Promenade and take in the Christmas lights on the skyscrapers.
3. Cram into Hong Kong Disneyland with mainland tourists and students off from school.
4. Shop 'til you drop, spending most if not all of your money on yourself.
5. Escape the territory on the first available flight.
Mabel and I will take in an early movie and then drop by the famous Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree. When the temperature dips in the evening, we'll settle down for a traditional Chinese hot pot dinner at home.
It ain't fancy, but it's peaceful, and it beats the inevitable stress which would come from fighting the crowds in Hong Kong's busiest districts.
This new village house is our Christmas gift to each other.
