Seven

It's been seven years.

View large image October 1 is the 7th anniversary of my move to Hong Kong; I'm now eligible to apply for permanent resident status.

While it doesn't mean I'll be a citizen of the People's Republic of China, having Right of Abode in the HKSAR affords additional rights, such as entering or exiting the territory without need of my Canadian passport.

Once I gain a Permanent Identity Card, I'll be an official local, though I've considered myself one for a long time. Given the nature of this city, FOB status doesn't last long.

Thanks to this personal web site, also seven years old today (Happy Birthday to BWG; over 7.25 million served), I've observed a repetitive behaviour pattern among new arrivals, which mirrors my own experiences to some degree.

However, a conscious effort not to become jaded to the peculiarities of this city and its people has allowed me to retain a Western perspective while appreciating and assimilating both Hong Kong and Chinese culture. This has helped keep my vision fresh and prevented me from turning into just another cynical expatriate.

Some of the best e-mail compliments I receive are from folks who used to live here (including Hong Kong Chinese), saying BWG rings true and brings back memories of a city they still love.

Many people ask when I intend to move back to Canada; it's common for most foreigners to live here for a short period. My answer is always the same: I have no idea; why would I want to leave? Granted, there are days when the air quality spoils my outlook, but overall I love this city and have no plans to emigrate.

I expect the next seven years in Hong Kong to be as wonderful as the first.
