The Unforgettable Fire

In memory of those who died in the Second World War, and to commemorate the 60th anniversary of VJ-Day, I recommend this article, titled The Unforgettable Fire.

Here's an excerpt from Orillia Today:

Some, including Clayton, were dispatched to defend Hong Kong from invading Japanese forces, in what would prove a bloody encounter that left scores of Canadians dead and many more imprisoned.

Dropped into a foreign environment with little knowledge of the landscape and no contact with outside supports, the Allied soldiers had little chance against the enemy.

"All you were doing was you were fighting with the Bren guns, a rifle and a bayonet," he adds. "Thirty per cent of the guys died in the hills and we never found them. They just went missing."

Either blown to bits, or having fallen dead into the nooks and crannies of Hong Kong's wild terrain, numerous soldiers remain disappeared.

It's a sobering thought.
