The Best Policy

After I got home from the Mong Kok Computer Centre, I saw a debit card purchase had failed.

The receipt showed the transaction had been cancelled, yet neither the shop staff nor myself had noticed. In short, I walked out with goods but hadn't paid for them. It was a rare error, but to take advantage of it would be wrong.

Eighteen days had passed before I had the opportunity to return to the store; it was Saturday afternoon and the centre was packed.

I picked my way through the crowd and entered the small shop, stopping at the till. The fellow there seemed confused when I retrieved my wallet.

Pulling out the old receipt, I explained what had happened and informed him I wanted to settle the account.

His surprised expression was comical; in his shock he thanked me several times while processing the new payment. I just stood there with a big grin on my face.

I don't know whether I'd made his day or gave him a story to tell about a crazy foreigner, but the trip was worth the effort.
