Immigration Indolence

The queues at mainland China's immigration counters have grown longer.

No logical reason is apparent, but Chinese authorities feel it's acceptable to have only three counters open on weekends (the busiest days of the week), with queues up to 30 deep.

What's more irritating is several officers can be seen moving about, but with no discernible agenda. From the perspective of one stuck in the queue, it looks like "busy work": the appearance of doing something important while in truth doing nothing at all.

Meanwhile, the ones working the booths are plank-faced and lethargic. By comparison, their Hong Kong counterparts move with considerable speed.

Mainland immigration officers give three-toed sloths a bad name.
