Long Pole Shortcut

The KCR displays signs and video warning people not to attempt retrieval of personal items which fall onto the tracks.

In that event, station staff produce a long pole to snag and collect the object, because climbing back up to the platform from the rail bed is more difficult than folks realise.

View large image One man learned this lesson the hard way after he tried to cross the tracks to get to the opposite platform at University station; taking the stairs and using the concourse was too much trouble. Thanks to the train he couldn't avoid, he's in the hospital in critical condition.

If there's a bright side, he was hit instead of run over, which saved KCR staff the trouble of recovering body parts with those long poles.
