14K Tarnished

In a colossal loss of face, two 14K triad big brothers have apologised to the police after a group of underlings insulted and challenged officers during an inspection at a nightclub.

The act of contrition has cut zero ice with the cops.

... the force had adopted a hardline approach and would continue daily raids on triad-controlled businesses across the city until all triad activities and late-night violence had been suppressed.

"We will not tolerate their challenge and we have to maintain law and order in Hong Kong ..."

... in addition to the raids, officers would collect evidence against triad bosses to wipe out the triad group's "family tree".

The operation came as an apparent retaliation after a group of 14K gangsters clashed with officers during a routine inspection at the 348 Disco ...

The men called in more gang members in a show of strength and one reportedly insulted an officer, saying he was too low-ranking to demand to see his identity card.

The two big brothers have apparently guaranteed that seven of their followers who openly challenged police authority that night would be punished and instructed never to do it again.

It'll be interesting to see whether the police will destroy the 14K outright. Even if they do, the Wo Shing Wo and Sun Yee On will still be active.

Triad societies are like the mythical Greek Hydra: you can cut off one head, but it'll grow back.
