New Tradition

View large image Twenty years of hurling oranges tied to cards onto the Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree has done so much damage that the ban on the practice has been extended to give the tree a chance to recover.

Some folks are pouting about not being allowed to practice the custom, which in truth isn't that old a tradition. It's odd that a legend of someone praying at a tree evolved to winging fruit at it.

Superstitious Hong Kongers would pee into Victoria Harbour if they thought the act would grant their wishes.

I have a simple solution; start a new tradition that would curb environmental destruction and feed people at the same time: for luck, give a bag of oranges to someone in need.
