Paranoid Peon
I was on assignment, shooting photos at various locations, one of which was the AIA Building in Wan Chai.
Beginning on the west side of Stubbs Road, I headed uphill to gain better vantage points.
From there I progressed to the east side, which brought me closer to the building. Again I climbed the sidewalk as I searched for interesting angles.
I'd shot 20 frames, but wanted one last photo, to exclude the flagless flagpoles out front. I took no more than five steps from the sidewalk to get the angle I needed when the overzealous security guard rushed out of his little booth up the driveway, like a yappy dog defending his territory.
"Excuse me, Sir, but you are not allowed to take photos of the building!"
I was incredulous.
"Excuse me, but there isn't a sign anywhere saying I can't."
"I saw you taking some photos already; you are not allowed to take photos of the building!"
It was as though he'd been thinking about coming down earlier to tell me off. That I was on public property when I took the photos never entered his mind.
What did he think I was doing: casing the joint for a terrorist strike?
