The fires broke out despite repeated warnings by the government for grave-sweepers to be careful with fire and clean up after paying their tributes. The Fire Services Department had received 107 reports of fires by 5pm and firefighters were still trying to put out 30 at 6pm.

Cemeteries at Ma On Shan, Yuen Long, Fanling, Tung Chung, Tai Po and on Lamma Island were among those that caught fire. Government Flying Service helicopters were called in to drop water bombs at many sites.

This is what happens when people get carried away with torching Hell Money.
