Lucky Lefty
Two triad thugs wearing surgical masks charged into a restaurant during afternoon tea and attacked an insurance agent in front of his horrified girlfriend, 20 customers and restaurant employees.
Without a word, one held a knife to Lee Kwok-sum's throat while the other lopped off his right hand and tossed it on the table. The men escaped into a waiting getaway car.
The restaurant cashier described Lee as the picture of calmness.
From The Standard:
"He didn't yell or cry. He used his left hand to hold up the right hand which was bleeding profusely and said to me, 'could I please have some ice to freeze my hand?'"
The ambulance crew packed the severed hand in a bag filled with ice and took Lee to surgery.
A triad boss had ordered the assault because Lee was pursuing his girlfriend, yet during an interview with police, Lee claimed he knew nothing about it nor had any triad links.
Assuming he was telling the truth, the gangsters mutilated him by mistake. Either that or they just hate insurance agents.
Should it turn out to be a case of mistaken identity, Lee's lucky the triad boss hadn't ordered him whacked.
