Whiny TV

Reason #6 why Hong Kong TV sucks: whiny women in soap operas.

I hear it daily when my mother-in-law immerses herself in that make-believe world where no one ever gets along.

In each episode of every show and regardless of the cause, a minimum of one woman will speak in a petulant, whiny, I'm-not-getting-my-way tone.

It would be awful in English. In Cantonese, it's worse. These programs make a fascinating language as annoying as it can be.

The male leads in these shows attempt to placate the pouting, whimpering spoiled brat, when 98% of us would want to slap her like Cher in Moonstruck and yell: Snap out of it!

These soaps set a bad example for young women, many of whom can be seen crying, pouting and making scenes in public during disagreements with their boyfriends.

Thank God the percentage of sensible women outweighs the snivellers.
