Twice the Price

A British tourist who'd been duped into paying twice the market price on a digital camera is returning to Hong Kong to give evidence in a trial against the salesman who ripped him off.

View large image The case highlights a long-running problem in Tsim Sha Tsui, where unscrupulous electronics dealers take advantage of consumers they know won't return to complain.

In this instance, the police are footing the bill. Aside of prosecuting the scammer, police will return confiscated money to the victim, a message they hope will reassure tourists it's safe to buy in Hong Kong.

Shopping in Hong Kong is the same as anywhere else. Should you want to buy electronics, do your homework. Know the models and the prices.

You'll be able to tell anyone trying to convince you to spend more to get stuffed.
