The Swarm

Go to any Hong Kong shopping mall on Sunday and you'll encounter the swarm.

View large image Plaza Hollywood in Diamond Hill and Sha Tin Town Centre are noted for this phenomenon. Given to holding regular product promotions under domed atriums and along passageways, these shopping meccas become overwhelmed by the streaming crush of bodies.

Freed from the prison of the weekday work world, the minions invade malls like ants bent on looting a termite mound. The swarm impedes progress, fills restaurants beyond capacity, generates long queues and makes shopping a din-filled, headache-inducing whirlwind that sucks energy from the mind and body.

Yet despite its negatives, the swarm is good for the economy.

Everyone gets caught in it at some point, but to retain your sanity, shop during the week.
