Lap of Luxury
Hong Kong's most expensive townhouse can be rented for a mere HK$350,000 per month, more than double the average annual income.
That's about US$45,000. It measures 6,030 square feet, with six bedrooms and 3,000 square feet of landscaped gardens. It offers a 360-degree view of Victoria Harbour, Lamma Channel and the South China Sea.
China Resources Group, the developer, is billing it as a "haven of relaxation and tranquillity"; "the ultimate in luxury living"; a place to "refresh your soul and live life to the fullest" while acknowledging "life is a game where happiness is the goal".
Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad would kill us, and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."
And you try and tell the young people of today that; they won't believe you.
Manhattan is a comparative bargain.
... an estate agent in Manhattan, when asked what he had for US$45,000, the equivalent of HK$350,000 a month, said: "Oh my God, are you crazy? For rent? US$45,000? The most expensive I have is US$17,000 a month, very nice place, Fifth Avenue and Central Park, four bedrooms. Are you interested?"
The four other townhouses at 40 Peak Road vary in size from 5,419 to 5,874 square feet, with five bedrooms and a master en suite with a marble bathroom.
For the ultra-wealthy, Hong Kong is a playground.
