He's Got A Ticket To Ride
October 1 will be the 25th anniversary of the first run of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR).
To mark the occasion, the MTR has decorated a special train to run on the Tsuen Wan line until the end of 2004. The exterior has been painted with murals of tourist destinations, while the interior contains photos of MTR stations from yesteryear through the present. From humble beginnings of one line with nine stations, the MTR now serves 2.3 million people daily through 50 stations.
Alan Cheung Siu-man was nine years old when he made the inaugural run with his father.
He paid $50 for a charity ticket and the chance to be among the first passengers. Along with a Sing Pao newspaper article in which a photo of Cheung and his father appeared, he's collected commemorative tickets issued by the MTR.
From The Standard:
Reminiscing about that special day, he says: "My father warned me that I mustn't lose the ticket. I remembered looking at the tiny slip of plastic full of wonder." He still has it.
Trust the media to miss the most important question: why didn't the big fan of the MTR become a train driver?
