100 Years of Trams

HongKong Tramways celebrates its centenary this year.

Its web site has been redesigned and is chock full of great information on the history of the tram.

From the site:

When Hongkong Tramways was founded, the 26 tramcars of the first fleet were all single-deck.

After almost 100 years, we now own and operate a fleet of 163 tramcars which includes 2 antique tramcars.

It is the world's largest fleet of double-deck tramcars still in operation, carrying an average of 240,000 passengers every day.

I love the trams, despite the old models had low ceilings. The first time I took one, I went from Kennedy Town to Shau Kei Wan.

The front seat of the upper deck afforded a view of the layout of Hong Kong Island. Slower than buses, the tram gave me time to absorb my surroundings and learn how people live and move in the city.

It will always have a special place in my heart.
