Spastics?
I saw a van emblazoned with:
The Spastics Association of Hong Kong
Spastics? That's rude.
From the organisation's web site:
Our Vision
To be a world class rehabilitation service organization.
History
The Association was established in 1963 and was named "The Spastic Children's Association of Hong Kong". Later it expanded to include services for the adults, and was renamed as "The Spastics Association of Hong Kong", a registered society and was incorporated in 1976 as a limited company.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary, 10th Edition 2002, lists the noun definition of spastic as someone with cerebral palsy. The secondary definition is "informal, offensive an incompetent or uncoordinated person."
It warns:
In modern use the term spastic is likely to cause offence. It is preferable to use phrasing such as people with cerebral palsy instead.
Considering its vision, the organisation would be wise to change its name.
