Year of the Monkey King

Walking through the Hong Kong Zoological and Botancial Gardens in Mid-Levels, I passed by the statue of King George VI.

View large image I was reminded of the flap that popped up a year ago when some district councillors suggested moving the monument next to the monkey enclosure to make way for a statue of Dr. Sun Yat-sen. The proposal was shot down in flames.

The uproar was over the top. People don't visit Hong Kong to look at statues. I hardly ever see many people in the gardens, and those I do see pay zero attention to old George.

Would the councillors have been successful had they waited until now, the Year of the Monkey, to float the idea?

Then it would have seemed auspicious.
