It will put an end to illegal scanning of police radio traffic, which news agencies use to get the drop on each other. Hordes of journalists wait on standby for the call to film or photograph an event, often arriving before emergency services and often getting in the way.
Photos of blood on the pavement sells newspapers. The gorier the photo, the better.
This move will force newshounds to ferret out stories instead of having them handed over. The theory is this will make them better reporters, as they'll have to build upon their base of sources and contacts.
Because we don't need to see what jumpers look like when they've landed.
