The views I got on a trek up several of Hong Kong's higher peaks were gorgeous.
Beginning from the picnic site at Ma On Shan Country Park, I found the vertical back trail and climbed up Tiu Shau Ngam toward the top of the 677-metre-high Ngau Ngak Shan, otherwise known as The Hunch Backs.
From there I walked down the ridge that led up to the summit of Ma On Shan, at 702 metres. Awaiting me, written on the trigonometric marker post, was a message from Tim. Thanks, Tim. It's nice to know you care.
Winding my way down to the MacLehose Trail, I came to the base of Tai Kam Chung, or Pyramid Hill. Curiosity got the better of me, and though tired, I ascended to its summit, at 536 metres.
After a long walk home, my knees were blue flame. Aside of a nasty sunburn (I neglected to apply sunblock), I earned one small abrasion from slipping on scree, the amount of which was considerable. I didn't pitch myself off the edge of a cliff, but next time I'll wear proper hiking boots.
The trek was worth it. From the various peaks I could see as far as Plover Cover, Tolo Harbour, Tolo Channel, Three Fathoms Cove, Sai Kung and beyond. Thanks to the winter monsoon, haze was minimal.
Though taxing, the Ma On Shan trail has become one of my favourite hikes.
