Opening Their Eyes

View large image This is an automated clacker by the escalator in a Kowloon-Canton Railway station.

It emits a steady clicking sound to alert the blind or those with other visual impairments that the entrance or exit of the escalator is near. The KCR employs a host of aids for the blind, including tracks along the floor as guides to various areas of importance within and without the station.

Putting a pictogram on a device for the blind may seem like a bad joke, but it's there for the benefit of the sighted; it staves off complaints from the clueless about the noise.

Even the sighted can have impaired vision.
