A Walk in the Clouds
Since we moved to Ma On Shan, I've wanted to hike the mountain of the same name.
Stage Four of the MacLehose Trail runs right past it, while a narrower path splits off, leading climbers to the peak. But as I passed Tai Kam Chung (Pyramid Hill), the weather rolled in. The clouds were so thick I couldn't see the other mountains, and not more than 30 metres of the path ahead.
A warning sign indicated the path to the peak was very difficult and dangerous during inclement weather. I wasn't inclined to try the route in the rain. It would've been pointless; I wouldn't have been able to see anything.
Further down the trail, the rain broke and the clouds swirled around the mountain top. Despite not having a view, the mist was neat to watch, so the trip wasn't wasted. The beautiful scenery convinced me it would be worthwhile to return on a nicer day.
As I've gained a better understanding of the trails, the next time I head up I'll take the back path up Ngau Ngak Shan (The Hunchbacks), and then follow it to the peak of Ma On Shan.
The views should be spectacular, provided I don't forget to check the forecast first and end up taking another walk in the clouds.
