Snake Soup

If you're looking for a nice, hot bowl of snake soup this winter, you might find it hard to come by.

It's another victim of SARS; since the scare, mainland China hasn't lifted the ban on snake exports. In turn, many snake soup restaurants aren't putting it on the menu.

"I don't see it served anywhere. It doesn't seem like restaurants are coming out with any promotional packages," said Vincent Li, a ... financial consultant whose company puts on snake dinners for employees every year.

Snake aficionados view the meat as a winter-warming food, even an aphrodisiac. "It tastes great. It's good for your body," said Mr Li.

Most of the 130 shops that serve snake are called Seh Wong, or Snake King. One shop is called Snake Queen.

I have yet to try snake soup. I'm not averse to the idea, but it's not a priority.

I should slither into a soup shop sometime.
