Farewell, Anita Mui
Anita Mui Yim-fong (梅豔芳), a gifted singer and actress, died at 2.50am December 30, from complications caused by her fight against cervical cancer.
She was 40 years old.
She entered Hong Kong Sanitorium when her condition deteriorated.
"Yesterday evening Mui's condition declined rapidly. But even so, she used her strength and determination to hang in there until all of us arrived," said Eric Tsang Chi-wai.
"She wanted to hear us bid her farewell before leaving peacefully. She passed away with a smile on her face."
Pansy Ho Chiu-king, singer Alan Tam Wing-lun, director John Sham Kin-fun, Mui's manager Marianne and actor Jackie Chan each spoke briefly about the star. No questions were allowed. Details about Mui's death will not be released until further notice.
"Mui belongs to all of Hong Kong and not just us. She loves to be beautiful and she loves to be around people," said Jackie Chan.
"She wanted to go peacefully. Fans and people who care about her, please do not cry or call out her name. This was her wish."
She took in one of Mui's spectacular final concerts, determined to go for fear she would regret not seeing Mui perform should her fight against cancer fail.
Her heart is lighter today for having been there.
The most emotional moment in the concert came when Mui, wearing a wedding dress, told the audience it was unlikely she would ever marry.
She then walked down a red carpet to leave the stage.
With the loss of Leslie Cheung (張國榮) earlier this year, Hong Kong has seen two of its most talented lights go out.
