Clean Trio

View large image Since the SARS outbreak, Team Clean has produced interesting advertising material to educate the worst Hong Kong residents to change their bad habits.

The ads are working; streets are much cleaner. I've advocated a hefty fine for offenses such as littering and spitting. It's amazing what a $1,500 hit* will do.

View large image One of my favourite ads depicts two of the popular trio of Chinese deities known as Fok, Lok and Sau. I tried to find a copy of the video that you might see it, but was unable to locate it.

A two-part story, it depicts a semi-transparent Lok, or the god of Luck and Wealth, turning his back on a litterbug who throws away a losing lottery ticket. Similarly, Sau, the god of Health and Longevity, avoids a sick man who spits on the floor.

In the alternate version, Fok rewards the luckless lottery player after he tosses a losing ticket in a trash bin. His touch makes the player win on his next ticket. And because the sick man elects to spit into a tissue, Sau also blesses him, thereby restoring his health.

I enjoyed the tie-in with Chinese beliefs, a clever way to make people take notice.

Hats off to Team Clean for the inventiveness and cultural relevance of their ads!
