Crocodile Heaven

The Yuen Long crocodile is proving a difficult catch.

Aussie croc expert John Lever continues to be frustrated as numerous factors conspire to keep the reptile wary and shy. Each time he draws near, the crocodile disappears.

That's not the worst of it. The working conditions are beyond rude:

Mr Lever says the putrid Yuen Long creek is one of the most polluted waterways he has ever seen.

The smell at low tide was indescribably horrible, he said after returning from the first of his early-morning croc hunts this week. "It's quite disgusting, thick, soupy mud."

Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department officers had told him effluent from nearby pig farms poured into these waterways, fouling them for fish, birds, wildlife and residents alike.

"I couldn't believe it when I saw people in boats out fishing," said Mr Lever. "To think they eat those fish."

No wonder Lever's using a boat instead of wading in to grab the beast.
