Not A Triad Movie

Triad activity happens out of sight, in the wee hours, or beneath the veneer of Hong Kong life.

But every now and then, it spills into the streets. Like a scene out of a Hong Kong movie, two rival triad gangs turned West Kowloon into a battle zone.

At least seven cars were involved in the chase, which began at 12.30am in Hoi Ting Road, Mongkok, and involved the rival gangsters ramming each others' vehicles. The men then leapt from their vehicles outside the Charming Garden residential building and attacked each other with choppers and water pipes, according to a police spokeswoman. They fled in their cars before police arrived.

Gang members in two vehicles then chased each other onto the Kwai Chung Road flyover in Lai Chi Kok. A witness said that when one of the vehicles crashed and rolled on to its side, five men leaped from the other car, armed with knives and water pipes.

They attacked the men who were in the crashed car, which burst into flames. Both groups fled before police arrived and it is not known if anyone was injured. Only the burning car was found at the scene when emergency crews arrived.

Within the next hour, two other cars were found torched in Tsing Yi and Kowloon Tong, and another three cars with damage to their front and rear were discovered in Mongkok.

A reliable source said last night that the clash between the two gangs erupted when a top triad official had his car stolen recently by rival gang members. The source said negotiations between the gangs for the return of the car turned sour when the thieves demanded a payment.

Kowloon West regional crime unit officers investigating the case said four of the vehicles involved in the chase were stolen cars. Detectives mounted a Hong Kong-wide search for the gangsters last night. By midnight, at least four suspects had been arrested.

In the movies, no one would have been arrested.
