Subway Search

Unlike in the movies, it's difficult to escape detection inside a Hong Kong subway tunnel.

A 24-year-old man learned that lesson when he led MTR staff, police and firefighters on a four-hour game of hide and seek in a tunnel at Tai Wo Hau station.

Just before 16.00 the alarm sounded on Platform 2, after a train driver saw the man in the tunnel. The line was stopped for 15 minutes as staff walked through and searched. Firefighters and police were called in. The team fanned out, swept the tunnel with flashlights and heat detectors, and boarded trains to see if the man had entered one.

At 20.00 they conducted another sweep using a special train, and in seven minutes they found the man hiding inside a drainage well 100 metres inside the tunnel.

Had the search team been led by Tommy Lee Jones, they would have heard him say, "We've got a gopher," and found him inside five minutes.
