Chief, Cook and Bottle-Washer

A survey revealed Hong Kong men feel housework is "women's work", and as such prefer to leave it to their partners or maids.

Before I get off on a rant on Neanderthal attitudes, I must recognise traditional Chinese culture and values that place a woman in charge of the household and the children. Many women believe their role is management of the home, but taking culture into account doesn't absolve men of their responsibilities. The tone of the responses was men felt housework was "beneath them". This in turn speaks volumes about the inequality of men and women on the social ladder; many men treat women as second-class citizens.

What a repugnant attitude. The survey revealed one-third of men do no housework, while another third handle 20% of the load. By comparison, 16% of women do no housework.

Only 8.8% of men could be labelled as "house-husbands", whereby they handle over 60% of the housework. I fall into this category. I've been able to cook, clean and do my own laundry since I was six years old. The looks of amazement I get when people learn that:

1. I don't have or want a maid.

2. I'm capable of cleaning up after myself.

are amusing. Domestic helpers and housewives who've seen me wash dishes, fold laundry or go grocery shopping have been stunned. Some men react with horror when I tell them I clean the toilet. Even in Canada I knew men who were clueless about housework; they couldn't handle their own laundry. That's pathetic.

Come on guys, is it that hard to help around the house? Where is it written your partner is your slave? Cultural values notwithstanding, it's not difficult to be more attentive to her needs. It's called being considerate.

Whatever she desires, whether it be self-improvement, a hobby or to become involved in a cause, it won't happen because you, the magnanimous master, have granted her more free time. It'll happen because you love and respect her enough to want her to enjoy life.

She'd be much happier if you'd get your ass off the couch, dispose of your newspaper and empty beer bottles, pick up your socks and clean the bathroom.
