I met with Tony Banham, author of Not the Slightest Chance, an excellent and well-researched piece of a vital part of Hong Kong's storied history.
He's a pleasant fellow, and his knowledge of the Defence of Hong Kong is extensive. I enjoyed our conversation and hope to meet with him again.
Tony spent more than 10 years collecting and cross-referencing names, dates and locations in the pursuit of an accurate portrayal of 18 days of brutal conflict. It isn't a mere book of war stories, nor is it a dull, dry recitation of facts and figures. It brings history to life, putting the spotlight on the individuals caught in the struggle.
This work will be of interest to veterans of the battle and their families, surviving families of those who died, Hong Kong residents, and anyone with a keen desire to learn of the sacrifices made in defence of freedom. Even visitors should pick up this book; Hong Kong is more than skyscrapers and shopping.
If you love history as I do, I highly recommend Not the Slightest Chance.
