SARS: The Toilet from Hell

Investigators have determined the cause of the SARS outbreak at Amoy Gardens.

A mainland Chinese man suffering from chronic renal disease and carrying the SARS virus visited his brother in Block E. Plagued by diarrhea, the man used the toilet several times.

From there, the virus moved to other flats via the waste drainage pipes. These pipes, called U-traps, should be filled with water to prevent sewer odors from entering the washroom. In Amoy Gardens, however, most of these U-traps were dry through improper maintenance. Some of the infected waste was flushed back into toilets on several floors.

The newly infected victims then spread the disease to other blocks via lifts and direct contact with other residents.

Once again, I fall to my knees and thank God we escaped the flat possessed by the Toilet from Hell.
