Idea-Jacked
Have I been idea-jacked?
Imagine my surprise to see my idea gracing the cover of The Economist.
Considering I created and posted my Chairman Maosk image on April 11, and this edition of their magazine came out April 24, it sure doesn't seem like a coincidence that they chose Mao to put under a mask. But then again, it might well have been independently conceived.
How can I know with certainty whether they saw my work and decided to recreate it with a professional artist? It's impossible to say. I can't deny the possibility the artist came up with the idea on his own. I'm not even sure if this could be considered copyright violation.
The truth is, I don't know how to feel about this.
Note: I was contacted by an online acquaintance who works for the Economist. She put in a word for me with the editor, which I appreciate. His reply? Great minds think alike; the similarity of the idea was a coincidence. I can live with that.
