Avoiding SARS

The World Health Organisation has sent out an advisory for tourists and business people to avoid Hong Kong.

If you're coming despite the SARS outbreak, you would do well to follow these tips:

1. Wear a properly-fitted mask (N95 or 3-ply surgical) in the lift, on escalators, in buses, in the MTR or KCR, in offices, restaurants and shopping malls. Avoid cinemas.

2. Don't touch your mask; it traps droplets. Touching your mask and then your face defeats the purpose of wearing it.

3. Use a key or another object to handle buttons in the lift. You may even consider wearing disposable latex gloves if you're not allergic.

4. Wash your hands frequently. Don't rub your eyes, or touch your nose or mouth before washing your hands.

5. Clean the door handles, furniture and the floor with diluted (1 in 100) bleaching detergent.

6. Wash your clothes after going home.

7. Do not share towels.

9. Patients are highly infectious two to three days even before developing symptoms. Treat those not wearing masks as potentially infectious even if they appear healthy.

10. A sneeze may contain 5,000 droplets, and despite common beliefs, can travel as far as four metres.
