SARS: Unmasking The Facts

This is typical of the news images when it comes to the SARS outbreak:

This hasn't been my experience. On a trip to the mall, I noted that both ways, fewer than 30% of those using the residential shuttle bus wore masks, and not all of those used them properly. Several had the masks pulled down to cover only their mouths, thus exposing their noses. They might as well not bother if they're going to be stupid.

Inside the mall the number of people wearing masks was less than 10%. Granted, we live in the New Territories as opposed to the crowded Hong Kong Island, but it reflects how the media depicts public response to the outbreak, as opposed to the truth of public behaviour.

The media focuses on hot spots such as public transportation and centers of high population density, as those areas pose a much greater risk of transmission. Yet it's unbalanced reporting.

Does this mean I don't take precautions? I do, but common sense prevails. When I use public transportation, I use a mask. I don't touch my face or eyes. I wash my hands when necessary and as soon as I get home. I use a powerful disinfectant to clean door handles and surfaces that everyone in the flat touches. I steer clear of people who cough or sneeze.

If I wanted to shorten a long queue in front of me, I could pretend to cough or sneeze, but that'd be cruel.
