SARS Quarantine
A quarantine has been announced.
It restricts the movements of anyone who has had close contact with SARS patients. They must stay away from work or schools, and they'll need daily check-ups in government clinics within a 10-day period. Anyone failing to meet this quarantine will be fined $5,000 or face six months in jail.
More stringent controls haven't been put into effect, including immigration and emigration screens, isolation stations to detain people, isolation of aircraft and ships, searches of buildings if people are suspected of being infected, disinfecting flats and mandatory reporting if the disease is found.
Is the quarantine necessary? Since February 21, 367 people have been infected, an average of 10 people per day.
All that from one man who brought the disease into Hong Kong.
