SARS: Preying On Fear
What the heck is wrong with some shopkeepers I'll never know.
As a consequence of the SARS outbreak, the government has advised citizens to wear masks when out in public; as such sales of masks that protect against airborne particulates have skyrocketed.
The problem is that some shopkeepers have increased prices anywhere from 500 to 1000%. A mask that retails for HK$10 is now selling for HK$50. One shop in Wan Chai charged HK$100. This despite that suppliers have promised that they wouldn't raise prices and would quickly restock shops.
Panic-buying allows shopkeepers to get away with short-term hijacking of customer wallets. Given the nature of the need for these products, their money-grubbing tactics are deplorable.
People should permanently boycott any store that engages in such behaviour.
