Locker Room Torture
Music is piped into the gym where I work out: a mix of North American dance music, Cantopop, and even country (think line-dancing).
I have no idea how they selected the artists, but low royalty payments must be involved, because most of it is poor quality. I recognise just a handful of songs.
Different music is played in the washrooms and locker rooms. The powers that be elected to play soft, adult contemporary and R & B. That wouldn't be bad, but the songs are from the 70s and 80s. They put ancient stuff, such as Peaches and Herb, or Minnie Riperton, on a loop. Ripperton's song drives me insane. It's one of the most annoying songs on the planet, and it's still popular in Hong Kong.
Remember Lovin' You, from way back in 1974? That's the one where she sang that squeaky, high-pitched ah ah ah aah aaaah at the end of the chorus. Here's a sample of lyrics that might jog your memory.
Lovin' you has made my life so beautiful
And every day of my life is filled with lovin' you
Lovin' you I see your soul come shining through
And every time that we ooooh I'm more in love with you
It's not a good idea to have customers retching in their lockers.
Why couldn't they play Morcheeba in the changing areas? Skye Edwards has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I tried to give the club staff a CD, but was informed they couldn't play it as everything is provided by head office.
In other words, we're subject to the tastes and whims of one person.
Until said person gets a clue, I'll continue to be tortured after my workouts.
