Many people are suffering credit trouble, declaring bankruptcies or offing themselves because they feel they have no hope of climbing out of debt.

Yet banks are still offering ways to dig the hole deeper.

HSBC sent out a mailer. In it they encourage people to use their overdraft facility. The hook is that during the next two months, the more often they use it, the greater number of chances they'll earn to win HK$100,000.

That makes a lot of sense. Go into greater hock for a chance to win money. It fits right in with the Hong Kong gambling mentality.

Doesn't it sound like the pitch Macao's loansharks throw when you're down on your luck at the casino?
