Meat Market
Is it wrong to convert a monument into a supermarket?
Consider the 140-year-old former Stanley Police Station: built in 1859, it was the oldest standing station in Hong Kong. When the Japanese invaded during WWII, the Japanese Gendarmerie turned the building into its headquarters and constructed a mortuary onto the structure. After the war, the building once again became a police station, until 1974 when it was converted into a restaurant.
Wellcome, the supermarket chain that won the lease on the building, spent more money than usual on the renovation to preserve features such as a gun room, fireplaces and a chimney. I'd rather see a conversion than see a historical building get torn down and replaced with some gaudy monstrosity.
I just hope the former mortuary isn't the meat department.
