Because I Care
I'm sickened by the latest politically correct fad making the rounds this year, where people refrain from saying Merry Christmas and say Happy Holidays instead, in an effort not to offend someone who doesn't observe the Christian celebration.
Because they care.
What a load of crap. I've never been offended when someone celebrates Hanukkah or Ramadan; why should a Jew or Muslim be offended by Christmas? Last time I checked, they didn't give a tinker's damn. Has that changed?
The longer I'm away from Canada, the weaker Canadians appear each time I visit. I feel surrounded by hand-wringing, afraid-to-speak-their-minds wallflowers that go into coronary arrest at the sight of their own shadows.
Canadians have been lauded as peace-makers. They've been described as polite.
Nice.
Friendly.
There's nothing wrong with any of those traits, but they're so frightened of rocking the boat they've become pathetic.
Spineless.
Willing to kiss ass to get along with everyone.
It's an impossible scenario. People may be offended for all sorts of reasons, and there's no way to tell what might set someone off. It's all right to clean up your language and be sensitive to other people's feelings, but quit chucking the baby out with the bathwater.
Granted, there are plenty of boorish people who should exercise caution in choosing their adjectives, but the PC crowd has taken things too far.
Hong Kong is far behind North America in racial and sexual discrimination laws, which needs to be rectified. However, people often say what they think, which isn't always bad. When I arrived, I had several people tell me to my face that I was fat. I wasn't offended; I didn't care. You know why?
Because I was fat.
I had to live with the cold, hard truth, and I did something about it. I can't wait to get back to Hong Kong, where I'll be stared at, called a gwai louh, and have people be afraid to sit next to me on the bus.
It'll be refreshing.
