Bite The Big Apple

Don't mind the maggots.

The Big Apple, the fabled sleazy bar disco in Wan Chai, has disappeared. In its place is the upscale and trendy Borocay's.

During its 10-year tenure, The Big Apple was the last to close for the night, and had a reputation as a meat market. Greasy doesn't begin to describe it.

I never went near the place. The whole area of Suzie Wong nightclubs has dwindled and been reformed. One block of lowbrow establishments along Lockhart Road still exists for those determined to go slumming.

View large image Even if you aren't determined, walking down the sidewalk will see you greeted by women out front of each establishment who'll invite you in for a drink.

Those places will be busy when all the lonely young sailors float in to Hong Kong next week.
