Cantonese Colloquialisms
Cantonese colloquialisms taken at face value often make no sense.
As with English expressions, when explained the meaning is clear. Here are a few examples:
· A dog goes up the roof — there is a way: (with ulterior motives)
· May your whole family be rich and honoured: (to Hell with your whole family)
· Chicken in soup: (a person drenched with water)
· To dry one's life under the sun: (to boast of one's good fortunes)
· Three-legged stool: (an unreliable person)
· The tender shoots of a bamboo: (of good quality)
