Geese and Fireworks
Imagine a 600 square foot flat filled with 20 people nattering away for six hours.
They sound like geese on bennies. Loud geese.
That would be a fair description of the last two days.
From the far eastern outskirts of Kowloon at Tseung Kwan O, to the south side of Hong Kong Island at Aberdeen, to Tai Wai in the New Territories and Heng Fa Cheun on the eastern edge of Hong Kong Island, we've made the traditional trek to each of Mabel's auntie's homes to be surrounded by people talking, playing mah jong and otherwise making a racket.
We've been on buses, trains, minibuses and in taxis. We've given gifts and handed out lai see. The only thing I didn't do was eat the food. All those deep-fried greasy carbohydrates aren't good for my heart.
We drew the line at going to watch the fireworks when we heard that an hour before the show, 400,000 people were packed into Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai. Many had camped out the whole day to claim their spot.
Don't get me wrong, the fireworks are awesome if you've never seen them, but we have seen them many times, and we weren't in the mood to fight the crowds. The last time we were in Wan Chai for the show it took a long time to get clear of the venue.
So we're taking quiet time to relax.
We've had our fill of geese for this year.
