Smoking Towers
This poster was designed in the hope a local anti-smoking group would use it in its campaign:
The poster superimposed images of the WTC over two cigarettes. The artist claimed the image was created to generate awareness and therefore wasn't in poor taste:
The visual is fresh in people's minds so it has an impact ... four million people die [each year] from smoking.
He then went on to say tha commercial use would have been in poor taste.
Wouldn't selling to the anti-smoking lobby be commerce?
At least the chairman of the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health realised the poster was inappropriate:
I have no doubt that what [he] has done is quite imaginative but we have to walk a fine line, and we want people to look at tobacco deaths on its own merits. I think there is huge scope to introduce punchy, dramatic images without using the World Trade Centre.
Tacky.
