Roaming Rats

While cleaning the flat, I stepped outside to sweep off a mat.

I climbed a short flight of stairs to the door that led to a rooftop common area.

A large rat bounded up the steps behind me. When it saw me, it stopped, turned around and hopped down the stairs. When someone inside the neighbour's flat hissed at it, it turned around and leapt up the stairs. It saw me again, made a u-turn and scooted down the steps, but this time, the rat ignored the noise from the neighbours, squeezed through a space in the gate and entered their flat. I heard one of the children tell her mother a rat came in.

You've got to be stupid to leave your door open in a building where rats flourish. One of the kids later told me they're used to seeing rats in their home.

We've got to get out of this place.
