Gwai Louh: The Foreign Devil

What does gwai louh [gw-eye low] mean, anyway?

Gwai means ghost; louh is a colloquial term for a common man. This Cantonese expression refers to Caucasian foreigners. A hundred years ago, it was considered a great offense. Nowadays, it has lost its bite.

It doesn't bother me in the least. It's no different than when Caucasians called a Chinese person Chinaman. What goes around comes around.
